Canmore crush Banff........

Report from Alan McQueen....

The BVL resumed on Wednesday 27th, with Banff Springs playing
visitors Canmore FC in Banff.

Both teams had full squads, and the Springs
signalled early on in the game their intent to make it a very physical
affair, challenging hard for every loose ball, and not allowing the Canmore
team to settle into a pattern. This made for a very hard fought game on a
warm evening, Canmore used their large squad to good effect, with a flow of
fresh players rotating in and out of the game.

The Springs were content to use their more experienced players for longer spells. On 29 minutes Brandon
( ? ) a new signing for Canmore, flicked on a Lawrence White corner,
Andre ( ? ) showing great alertness in the 6 yard box, stole the loose ball,
and prodded it home for a 1 - 0 score to Canmore. The visitors kept a good
tempo going, and the Canmore defence led by Graeme Williams and Dave
Curson, ably supported by Steve Steele and Evan Peters, stood firm against a
robust physical assault from the Springs attack, led by the aggressive 6,4,
Blair ( ? ), who was a real test for the Canmore rear guard.

After one too
many hefty challenges all over the field by the Springs players, the referee
awarded Canmore a free kick, 25 yards from goal, in a central position,
Cohen Heruex, who was a thorn in the side of the Springs defence for the
entire game, managed to disrupt the home teams defensive wall, and Lawrence
White guided his shot into the bottom left hand of the goal, 2-0 to the
visitors.

Once more the Canmore team had to withstand a
period of very physical play from the Springs team, with Benoit Hebert
making an outstanding save from a very well struck free kick by Tony (? )
from 22 yards outside the Canmore penalty box, quickly followed by the half
time whistle.

The second half resumed with Canmore gaining a lot more
control of the game, with a firm uncompromising defence, Dennis ( ? )
filling in very well for the missing regular right back George Bayne, new
team members 22 year old Adam Dorfman, 15 year old Ryan McQueen, Todd Jones,
& Brandon ( ? ) showing great pace in all their work, Daniel Ince was having
a much more solid game on the left hand side then he had managed in recent
weeks, and showy Colin Mebs flitted in and out of the midfield, with a hard
working Jordan ( ? ) showing a never say die attitude, these young guns
forced the much more experienced Banff Springs team to chase shadows for the
remainder of the game, and they started to show the effects after 60
minutes, the fast running teenager Ryan McQueen found space on the left, and
crossed to the always direct Russian Ivan Babikov, who rammed home a half
chance from 10 yards out, 3- 0 to the young Canmore Utd side, after the
springs keeper had made one of several good saves, 3 from Brandon ( ? ) who
was showing great style at this stage of the game, again young Ryan McQueen
found himself good space on the right, and put in a telling cross that
forced a goalmouth scramble, which resulted in a handball, and a penalty for
Canmore, birthday boy, Adrian Hayney could not be persuaded to take the
kick, so 19 year old Jordan Leal stepped up and blasted in the 4th goal,
the springs keeper dived to his left and got a hand to it, but it was too
powerfully, 4-0 to Canmore, now the game opened up with the visitors really
upping their work rate, every body showing their superior fitness, the
springs players were looking like a badly beaten pugilist, wanting the
referee to stop, what was becoming a mauling from Canmores youthfull team,
Mr 110 percent, Cohen Hereux forced his way onto a thru ball on the right,
powered his way into the box, and piledrived a shot against the crossbar,
the ball fell loose to the alert Nick Papincoloau, who headed the ball into
an empty net from 2 yards, 5-0 to the defending champions, what looked to be
a good goal for Colin Mebs was ruled out for a bad offside call, but the
match was well and truly over by then, and the referee blew full time to
spare the now toothless Banff Springs side any further humiliation.

Lake Louise and Chili’s failed to advance out of the first round of the season opening mini tournament hosted by the Bow Valley Soccer League two weeks ago. In fact, neither team managed a goal before being eliminated from the competition.

But Sunday was redemption day as both clubs proved a capable and dangerous opponent who should be taken seriously on game day.

Due to flooding in Banff, week two’s games were moved from the Recreation Grounds to Canmore’s Millennium Park, and in the early match Chili’s took advantage of a rusty Rimrock side, which had yet to play a competitive contest this season.

Chili’s forward Glen Dressler scored in the 5th and 35th minutes to set the pace, but it was the experience of newcomers Mike Manka and Rudolf Popovsky who helped stabilize the shape of the squad. It allowed Chili’s more ball possession and a more direct attack than has been available to them in recent years.

Chili’s tacked on two more quick goals before the break and Jason Armstrong pulled one back in the 47th to give the Rimrock some life. But in the end the Chili’s squad were too strong and they walked off as victors 8-1 after 90 minutes.

In the late game, Canmore FC survived a scare from an energetic and determined Lake Louise side fresh off a 7-0 shellacking at the hands of Pika in week one.

After a frantic opening five minutes that saw opportunities at both ends of the park, the Lake’s Pio Fernandez jumped on a defensive miscue in the 9th and buried the ball in the lower left-hand corner of the net past Canmore keeper Stephen Steel.

In the 26th Ivan Babikov knotted things up for Canmore from the penalty spot, but it wasn’t until the 83rd minute, when 15 year old Ryan McQueen buried a loose ball from seven yards out on a quick counter attack that the points looked secure for Canmore.

Ben Kemp added some insurance in the 90th to make it 3-1, but Chelsea Aboud’s solid performance in goal for Lake Louise very nearly stole a point for the most recent addition to the league.

Goals in the first eight minutes by Koji Uda and Hiro Shinozaki helped Pika squeak past the Banff Springs 2-1. Steve Mills counted for the Springs in the 88th minute in the evenly played contest, but superb defensive play by Hikaru Otawa and Kazuya Nakazawa in the middle of the backline kept the Springs attack at bay for most of the afternoon.

Father’s Day weekend is a busy one for men’s soccer in the Valley, as the league hosts three games at the Recreation Grounds in Banff, and Canmore United travels to Revelstoke for the Big Bear Invitational.

Banff based players looking for a team to play with are invited to contact Tory Wintemute of Chili’s at twintemute@bestofbanff.com, or Lorne Langevin of Rimrock at lornelangevin@hotmail.com.

Temesger Estifinos, on the Lake Louise team, heads the ball as Hiro Shinozaki, on the Pika team, tries to get the rebound while another Lake Louise player watches during their game at the Banff Rec grounds on Sunday.

Pika Village and the Banff Springs both began their 2007 soccer season on the front foot, with 7-0 and 4-0 victories on Sunday at the Recreation Grounds in Banff.

In the early game the Springs came out hungry and organized against Chili’s. They were rewarded in the 17th minute when Adam Bonneau corralled a loose ball at the far edge of the 18-yard box and hit it solidly across the face of goal, where it ricocheted off two defenders and in past Chili’s keeper Mark Gaudreau.

The Springs struck again before the break when Steve Mills sprang Chili’s high offside trap and calmly stroked the ball into the back of the net on the breakaway, but after that Chili’s tightened things up and battled very hard to get back in the match.

Gaudreau played an inspired game in goal, turning aside a half dozen shots and coming off his line well to deal with the Springs’ persistent aerial attack.

It wasn’t until the 76th minute that the Springs finally put things out of reach on a goal by Blair Cowan, and it was Cowan’s physical presence up front that gave Chili’s the most trouble.

In the afternoon game Lake Louise got an eye-opening lesson on what it takes to play in a competitive league when they absorbed a 7-0 battering from Pika Village, last year’s second place finishers and defending playoff champions.

Pika, as always, were tactically sound and spread the scoring evenly throughout the contest, counting in the third, 25th, 37th, 43rd, 62nd, 76th, and 85th minutes, capitalizing most often on miscues by Lake Louise.

Lake Louise, for their part, were surprisingly athletic and energetic in the contest, and were it not for the lapses in concentration that occurred too frequently, they could have given Pika a closer game.

Canmore FC got a bye in week one, and due to a scheduling error, the match between Wild Bill’s and the Rimrock was postponed. Week two kicks off on Sunday, June 10 at the Recreation Grounds in Banff. Games are at 9 and 11 a.m., and 1 p.m.
